08/02/2024 Turkish Citizenship 7347 Turkish passport advantages and ranking for 2023

Article content

Many observers were startled by the ranking of the Turkish passport for 2023, as most predicted a reduction in its strength as a result of the impact of the Corona epidemic. However, the Turkish passport had demonstrated its strength over the previous several years and had only fallen a few rankings in comparison to the decline of several other countries' passports.

Damasturk Real Estate has prepared this article for you to cover everything linked to the Turkish passport and compare it with many other international passports, in line with all the relevant updates for foreigners desiring to gain citizenship and a Turkish passport. We also discussed the methods for getting it, its several types, and the countries that allow entry using it. To find out more, we recommend you read this article.

What makes one country's passport more powerful than others?

There are, of course, passports from certain countries that are stronger than others, but how do you know that? To demonstrate the superiority of one passport over another, worldwide passport rating platforms use basic criteria. What exactly are these criteria?

  • The ability passports offer to travel freely across countries.
  • The number of countries into which a passport holder can travel, in general.
  • The number of countries that a passport holder can access without a prior or electronic visa.

According to this standpoint, the value of passports around the world is fluctuating from day to day, which is also a result of the political and diplomatic ties that exist between countries. Not to forget the coronavirus pandemic, which had a significant impact on the closure of some countries on citizens from other countries.

The Turkish passport in 2023: power and advantages

It is projected that in only a few months, the Turkish passport will rise in the rankings, but this, however, depends on how well the world is going to deal with the effects of the pandemic.

According to international rankings and categorization, the Turkish passport ranks higher than the passports of various Arab nations; we will list the most notable of them below:

  • The Qatari passport

  • The Kuwaiti passport

  • The Saudi passport

  • The Chinese passport

  • The Tunisian passport

  • The Egyptian passport

The main reasons for seeking a Turkish passport

There are numerous broad factors, and they vary from one country's inhabitants to another's, but we all concur on a few key factors, namely:

  • The fact that several of Turkey's neighboring countries are embroiled in a number of conflicts.
  • The political and financial security of the Turkish state.
  • Acquiring a Turkish passport makes it easier to travel to more than 113 countries worldwide.
  • Considering the recent developments in the world, having a second passport in addition to the applicant's original passport is a viable decision.
  • Turkey's strategic position and importance on the world stage, particularly now that it is a party to resolving the international dispute and so has a voice and a veto power.
  • The Turkish state's breathtaking natural beauty and myriad tourist and archaeological sites.
  • Living in Turkey is a significant advantage due to the availability of an environment that is ideal for settlement and housing.
  • Turkey has affordable real estate compared to many other countries.

Types of Turkish passports

Turkish passports come in four variations:

  1. Red Turkish Passport

The ordinary Turkish passport, which is red in color, can be issued by anyone with Turkish citizenship without restriction and has a maximum validity of 10 years. It is easily obtained by paying the value-added tax, which we shall discuss later.

  1. Gray Turkish Passport

Members of official missions and personnel operating outside of Turkey, as well as Red Crescent staff, are permitted to travel using the gray service Turkish passport, which is given to Turkish state employees who represent Turkey in foreign countries and work in consulates, embassies, and other government positions. This passport may not be used for personal purposes such as tourism.

  1. Green Turkish Passport

Former ministers and members of parliament, as well as mayors in urban areas, athletes, and retired mayors, are all eligible to receive the special Turkish passport with a green hue. However, in order to obtain one, one must meet specific requirements.

  1. Black Turkish Passport

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues the black Turkish diplomatic passport. This passport also serves as a professional passport for Turkish diplomatic missions and grants visa-free travel to the majority of countries. It can be earned by all Turkish presidential personnel, including members of parliament, government ministers, mayors of Turkish cities, judges, and senior prosecutors.

How to get a Turkish passport in 2023

The Turkish government has made it possible to become a Turkish citizen and to receive a Turkish passport in six different ways:

  • Turkish citizenship by marriage

In order to get Turkish citizenship by marriage, one must marry a Turkish citizen. Consequently, a marriage in Turkey cannot provide Turkish citizenship if both of the spouses are not Turkish. Several requirements, however, must also be met, the most significant of which are:

  • One of the parties to the marriage must be of Turkish origin.
  • The marriage is entered into with the intention of starting a family, rather than simply obtaining Turkish citizenship.
  • The foreign spouse can apply for citizenship after at least three years from registering the marriage contract in its official form "in the official marriage departments."
  • The foreign spouse has to have a family residence permit extended three times in a row.
  • The process of obtaining Turkish citizenship by marriage might take anywhere from six months to a year or longer.
  • Turkish citizenship by real estate investment in Turkey

The majority of people from Arab countries and around the world have become interested in this investment method of obtaining Turkish citizenship, which involves purchasing one property in Turkey or possibly several properties with a combined value of $400,000. However, there are some fundamental requirements as follows:

  • The market value of the asset or real estate must be at least $400 000 USD.
  • Possession of one or more properties for three years with a commitment not to sell them under any circumstances.
  • Turkish citizenship is only conferred to the spouse with minor children under the age of 18 if the property owner has Turkish citizenship.
  • After three years, the process of gaining Turkish citizenship should not take more than 90 days.
  • Turkish citizenship by government investment or bank deposit

Since 2018, this law has been permitted to gain Turkish citizenship by bank deposit, and the sum has been cut from 2 million dollars to 500 thousand dollars. Anyway, there are other requirements that must be met after depositing, including the following:

  • Make a $500,000 deposit in a public or private bank in Turkey.
  • Through the Central Bank of Turkey exclusively, convert the sum into Turkish Lira.
  • Keep this deposit for a minimum of three years.
  • After three years, the process of obtaining Turkish citizenship takes no more than 90 days.
  • Turkish citizenship by providing job opportunities

Establishing a factory or business in Turkey that meets the following criteria is another novel way for people who want to invest in Turkey and start businesses or factories there:

  • Founding a factory or a business on Turkish territory, irrespective of the company's financial situation or budget.
  • Legally hiring at least 50 Turkish nationals and activating their social insurance.
  • The process of gaining Turkish citizenship should take no more than 90 days.
  • Turkish citizenship through work residence permit in Turkey

Anyone with a work residence permit in Turkey is eligible to apply for Turkish citizenship. There are requirements that must be fulfilled, of course:

  • Renewal of a work residence permit in Turkey for at least five years in a row.
  • The maximum amount of time spent outside of Turkey for the whole five-year term is six months.
  • The holder of a work permit must be included in the social insurance records during the validity of the residential permit.
  • Turkish citizenship, in this case, can be obtained in six months to two years.
  • Turkish citizenship by Turkish or Ottoman ancestry

One may petition for Turkish citizenship if their grandparents or parents had Turkish identities, or if they hold title deeds or other documents proving ownership of Ottoman or other assets. However, the following requirements must be fulfilled:

  • Evidence of Turkish or Ottoman ancestry is necessary.
  • A lawyer must be recruited to finish the application procedure and follow the application through to completion.
  • Turkish citizenship can be obtained in six months to two years.
