Turkey's Provinces: A Comprehensive Guide to Turkey's Regions

damasturk resale

Turkey experienced a tremendous growth and a big economic development at the beginning of the second century, capturing the interest of the whole globe, particularly that of investors and entrepreneurs. Therefore, whether you intend to invest in Turkey, particularly in the field of real estate investment in Turkey, or you simply want to travel there to enjoy the unrivaled tourist attractions, it is very recommended that you first familiarize yourself with the Turkish Republic, its seven founding provinces, as well as its most significant cities.

With a total area of 783 square kilometers, Turkey is a transcontinental republic, with most of its land in the Anatolia region in western Asia and a relatively smaller portion in southeast Europe's Balkans region. The Sea of Marmara, as well as the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, divide the two parts of the country, which together make up the Turkish Republic.

Ankara, the country's political capital, is Turkey's second-biggest metropolis after Istanbul, which is regarded as both its economic and largest city. However, the Turkish Republic is made up of 81 states or governorates, and it is bordered by eight countries, representing a variety of ethnicities and civilizations; in the northwest, Turkey is bordered by Greece and Bulgaria, and in the north by the Black Sea. Turkey shares borders with Georgia to the northeast; Armenia to the east; Iran and the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan and Iraq to the southeast; Syria and the Mediterranean Sea to the south; and the Aegean Sea to the west.

The variety of its topography and climatic qualities differentiates Turkey from many other countries. While some of its regions are hilly and mountainous, others are flat, coastal, very rainy, or arid. According to this variety, Turkish geography was classified into seven geographical areas or regions by the inaugural geography conference held in Ankara between June 6 and June 21, 1941, whereby the Turkish geography was separated into seven regions based on a number of factors, including the temperature, land and sea transit, and vegetation cover, while taking into account that Turkey is bordered by seas on three sides as well as the mountains dividing its interior sections of Anatolia from the coastlines.

An overview of Turkey's seven geographical areas

Turkey consists of four coastal regions and three inland regions, which are as follows:

  • The Sea of Marmara region (Marmara Bölgesi)

The region or province of the Sea of Marmara is the first of Turkey's seven regions, located in the northwest of the Republic of Turkey, with an area of 67 thousand square kilometers, comprising 8.5% of Turkey's total area, and is regarded as a bridge between the continents of Europe and Asia, as well as one of the most densely inhabited Turkish areas.

It is well-known for its manufacturing, commerce, tourism, and agriculture. The Marmara Sea covers roughly 11,000 square kilometers and is an inner sea that centers on the Marmara area, which bears its name. The Marmara area has a population of around 26.65 million people.

Istanbul City is one of the largest cities in Turkey's Marmara region, as well as the most populated and congested Turkish city, and is regarded as a significant center for business, education, economy, and tourism. However, in recent years, the city of Bursa has begun to gain industrial, tourist, and economic importance in a variety of fields, including the real estate industry, due to the reduction in its property costs when compared with those of Istanbul.

Istanbul, Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, Çanakkale, Kocaeli, Yalova, Sakarya, Bilecik, Bursa, and Balıkesir are all part of the Marmara Sea region.
