Turkey’s Baykar, a global leader in drone manufacturing, has officially acquired Piaggio Aerospace, one of Italy’s premier aircraft manufacturers, following approval from the Italian government.
A statement from Baykar highlighted that this acquisition aligns with its strategy to expand operations in Europe and boost aircraft production. Baykar outperformed global competitors by offering the best bid during the tender process.
Strategic Move
Founded in 1884, Piaggio Aerospace is renowned for its luxury business aircraft, particularly the “P.180 Avanti,” also known as the “Ferrari of the Skies.” The company also provides maintenance and support services to the Italian Ministry of Defense. Through this acquisition, Baykar is committed to preserving Piaggio’s legacy while advancing its operations.
Boosting Production and Employment
Baykar stated that the acquisition will enable the company to enhance its production capacity and solidify its position in the European aviation market. It also plans to increase employment opportunities in Italy while maintaining Piaggio’s historical identity.
Turkish Dominance in Drone Market
Turkey currently dominates 65% of the global drone market, according to a report by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS). With its drones exported to 35 countries, Baykar’s latest move further cements its global standing.
